The Hidden Costs of Pediatric Cancer and the Toll on Families
At Michael’s Way, we cover vital non-medical expenses, so families can focus on what matters most: their child’s care and healing.
For families facing this battle, the emotional toll is immense, but the financial strain can be just as overwhelming. Non-medical expenses—like rent, utilities, and transportation—can drain up to 40% of a family’s income, leaving many struggling to stay afloat.
Michael’s Way: Inspired by a Brother’s Battle
Michael’s Way was founded in 2002 by Chris McElwee to honor the memory of his brother, Michael, who lost his battle with leukemia at age 25.
During Michael’s treatment, Chris met a father who had lost his home after his son was diagnosed with leukemia. Inspired to act, Chris researched charities that could help—but found few addressing non-medical expenses like rent, utilities, or transportation. Dedicated to filling this gap, Chris created Michael’s Way and set out to provide thousands of families with the everyday support they desperately need during one of the hardest times of their lives.
